A few years ago I took a class on surface decoration for midrange ceramics. That was my introduction to slip transfers, or monoprinting in clay. I immediately fell in love with it and how it distorts landscapes in a dreamlike and rustic way. The images look aged and transformed, not unlike things remembered. Much of this work was inspired by long drives through sparsely inhabited country in Arizona and New Mexico, where I worked mapping soils. Part of my job was to read the landscape, how it formed. Without a dense covering of plant life, the geologic history was more visible.
